permits and trips

I'm glad you found the permits.

I'm going out of town tomorrow for about a week. I'm going to visit my new baby nephew (and my sister and her husband). I'm very excited.

soooo

you are too busy going to China to go to China. okay.

yeah, I thought you had been to S. China.

definitely ask Rochelle to check the permit files. I tried to file permits there when they came into my hands.

quake story specially hot-linked for quite possibly the busiest person I know.

Turkey permits

from your last trip there? did you give them to MVZ? ask Rochelle, she would know. the place to check would be the permit files. (under your name or maybe Ted, but probably you since Ted didn't go on that trip.)

Parham

are you going to China? near to where the earthquake was (Yunnan Prov.)?

Superfluous stuff

is ok, as long as it's entertaining, in my opinion.
e.g., two headed kitty cats.

word choice

how about non-redundant?

I think

those three words you used before non-superfluous all work.

Moment of Truth

Now we have two message boards. My personal goal is to post semi-equally on both. But we're all gonna have to pitch in to achieve the ultimate goal: keep both message boards ACTIVE, MEANINGFUL, NECESSARY, and NON-SUPERFLUOUS. I know it will be tough, but I know we are up to it.

p.s. I know there is a better way to say "non-superfluous", but I am just drawing a blank. Odds are that Spagna will know a better word. Spagna?

RTA back

so I finally got to the city centre in Ghent, which was pretty classic Europe--
cool lookin' buildings, and you can sit out in the middle of the scenery and drink beer 'till last call, which is, never. So things improved.

Also, i'm back in FFL, bitchin' about the scoring system as always.

spagna

did you get the yahoo fantasy football email? i sent it to HL_guy@hotmail.com.

hall of fame speeches

anyone see or hear the hall of fame speeches today?
I heard Barry Sanders dad gave him a horrible introduction, saying stuff like Barry was only the 3rd best RB ever.

I guess it is decided

No Live Draft. We will have an Auto Draft.

aye

URGENT

I am setting up the date and time for the LIVE ONLINE DRAFT. This should work out, as long as we all can choose a date and time. We do NOT have to be in the same room. We can do it any day in the next month. I would prefer September 1, a Wednesday, around 6 PM Pacific Time.

I need all your input: whether 9/1 at 6:00 PST is good, or suggest another date and time.

parham -- no schmidt

sorry to break your heart but Schmidt is starting today not Saturday. I heard Sabean on KNBR mention it. And now it's posted on the Giants home page. My roommate also has tix to the Maddux game and he was really looking forward to the matchup as well. Oh well, you still got Nomar, Barry, Sammy, Maddux, et al.

I'm in Ghent

it's kind of the college-town, as I understand it. I was not in the "city centre"which supposedly is a lot nicer. I wouldn't say it's exactly like Philly, just has a layer of grime I never noticed in Holland or Ireland. Maybe dirty like London, but not as lively as London.

I'm also limited in my movements by not having car access and having to go to meeting sessions.

A few good things: the bread and baked goods are fantastic and dirt cheap, and the fruit & veg are almost as good as CA, and cheaper. The meat seems primarily to be in kebab/gyro form, which is not 100% satisfactory for a carnivore like myself.

Not as many people speak English as in Holland, I guess since they all have to know Dutch and French, some can't be bothered with English, and I don't blame 'em.

greetings from Belgium

Hey I'm in Belgium, making this my most-distant, though not Parhamesque, posting.

I'm not sure what I was expecting, but its kind of a cross between Holland, which I found interesting and charming visually, and Philadelphia, which is just dirty. There are better parts than where I am I suppose, but overall I'm not impressed. The dorm I'm staying in is sort of done in the Clockwork Orange-modern architectural style, and the bed fell apart (literally, 2/3rds of the slats holding the mattress off the floor exploded from the shitty plastic clamps holding them in place) when I tried to sit on it and take my shoes off. Chico's sketchy dorms were worlds better than this place. Also it is hot, (80s, ~85% humidity) and nothing is air conditioned.

The beer is good, and cheap, (about 2Euros for a pint, 3e's for the better stuff, or just a bigger glass), which makes up for a lot.

The spider talks have ranged from incomprehensible, to awful, to pretty good in about an even split, and the schmoozing has been above-par.

I thought it would be a cooler place. I should take a train to Amsterdam for the day tomorrow, but I have to finish my talk.

Hasta luego, JOE

Parham

I hope you can sleep tonight, what with not knowing what Gammons said. It was very interesting, very insightful. It is really too bad that there is no way the text of that link can be entered in the address bar on your browser. just no way at all. I get all verklemmt just thinking about how sad that is.

um

I don't know how to do the hotlink thing and Im' headed out of town right now, so just go to espn baseball and gammons article.

Ab Fab sent me this on NoMah

in the detroit free press

The last line made me laugh:
-------------------------------------------------------

He might not crave the attention, but Barry Sanders will get his share of it in the week leading up to his enshrinement Sunday in the Pro Football Hall of Fame at Canton, Ohio.

Look for his name to pop up a few times on Fox Sports Net's "The Sports List," hosted at 5 p.m. weekdays by the other Sanders, Summer.

Today's show, ranking the top 10 running backs of all time, has Barry at No. 3, right where his dad does -- behind Jim Brown and Walter Payton, and ahead of Emmitt Smith, O.J. Simpson, Gale Sayers, Eric Dickerson, Marcus Allen, Tony Dorsett and Earl Campbell.

Tuesday they're doing '80s quarterbacks. Eric Hipple didn't make the cut.

thinking a bit more

last season he was criticized for not getting into the whole Cowboy Up spirit (e.g. shaving head, though Damon didn't shave his head either) and was definitly seen as being distant from the rest of the team. I hadn't heard that bus story that Shaugh. mentions.

hard to say

how general the feeling is since I'm observing from a distance. Obviously, he was unhappy this season about last winter's trade business. I think that was handled badly by the Boston owners (didn't get A-Rod and pissed off their own SS). also, Nomar has been dealing with an injury this season which would definitely add to his unhappiness. when he did play, the fans were very supportive I thought.

the other thing being reported today (e.g. Peter Gammons) is that Nomar was saying a day or so ago that he thought his achilles injury meant he might have to go back on the DL, and he said he couldn't play v. MN the other night as well. BUT the Cubs were told by Nomar's reps that the heel is fine. WTF. if this is true, it would probably change my opinion of him more than the stuff Shaughnessy said about him.

interesting article

I don't follow the red sox, so is that a widely or even narrowly held view. I had never heard that. Of course I understand he was hurt by the a-rod trade thing but other than that the writer is saying his attitude was unprovoked. What do you guys who know more about the situation think? After the Tigers, the Cubs are my next favorite team so I hope he doesn't bring in a bad attitude or a downer attitude.

Dan Shaughnessy

fairly scathing column on Nomar leaving.

p.s. Nomar is playing today. yay for digital cable.
